Author: Old Mother Hubbard
Here are some spooky movies to get people creeped out for Halloween:
1. “The Deeper You Dig” (2019) 14 year old Echo decides to go sledding at night against her mother’s wishes and gets hit by a pick up truck driven by drunk driver Kurt. Kurt tries to cover up the crime. Almost immediately Kurt is haunted by Echo’s ghost. Echo’s mother, who dabbles in witchcraft, is determined to find out what happened to her daughter. She ends up becoming part of Kurt’s life and things get real weird. It’s spooky, sad, creepy and bizarre/surreal at times. Memorable film indeed. Recommend. 4 and a half stars.
2. “The Omega Man” (1971) Biological warfare kills off most of the human race except for Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) who injected himself with a test vaccine. There are a few survivors but most of the plague victims turn in to mentally deranged horrifying murderous ghouls who’s looks will scare the bejesus out of you. One of my favorite movies of all time. 5 stars. Must see.
3. “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors” (1965) Five men, one by one, enter a train compartment in a London station bound for the town of Bradley, and are joined by a sixth, the mysterious Doctor Schreck (German for “terror”). During the journey, the doctor opens his pack of Tarot cards (which he calls his “House of Horrors”) and proceeds to reveal the destinies of each of the travellers. This provides the framework to tell five horror stories. 5 stars.
4. “Race With the Devil” (1975) Roger and Frank are 2 rich guys who buy a brand new RV and hit the road with their trophy wives heading for Aspen Colorado for a skiing vacation. They take the southern route through rural Texas and pull off in to a secluded spot on their first night. Unfortunately for them, they park directly across from where satanic worshippers occasionally practice ritual sacrifices. Roger and Frank witness a murder/sacrifice, mayhem begins and their relaxing vacation turns in to an absolute nightmare. Roger, Frank and their trophy wives Alice and Kelly apparently never heard the phrase “Loose lips sink ships” because they blab about witnessing the murder to strangers and eavesdroppers alike and give details about where they are going and what route they will be taking.
There are some fabulous and exciting car chases, crashes and stunts but the one who really steals the show is Lara Parker as Kelly. Lara Parker seems genuinely terrified through most of the film and gives a very convincing performance, especially when she finds her dog Ginger after a night at the local cowboy roadhouse.
I’ve been looking for this one online for a coon’s age and I finally found it. I was thinking about buying the DVD but, back then, it was ridiculously priced at $100 dollars or more (you can get it at a normal price now). If you haven’t seen it you’re missing out on a good and strange film about Satan worshippers. Frank, Roger, Alice and Kelly are dumbbells but that makes it more realistic. The town folk and the people at the RV park are super creepy. You’ll never look at strangers the same way after watching this. 4 stars.
By the way, Alice is played by actress Loretta Swit who you may remember as Maggie “Hot Lips” Hoolihan from the hit TV series MASH.
5. “Melancholia” (2011) Lars von Trier’s epic masterpiece who’s story revolves around two sisters, one of whom marries just before a rogue planet is about to collide with the Earth. The film is told in two parts. Part one is “Justine” (Kirsten Dunst) who, after her marriage, falls back in to her life of super deep depression. Part two is “Claire” (Charlotte Gainsbourg) who is the more composed of the 2 sisters but she becomes unglued the closer the rouge planet gets to destroying the Earth while Justine becomes more calm. Fabulous cast featuring John Hurt, Charlotte Rampling and Kiefer Sutherland. It’s a masterpiece. 5 stars of course. An end of the world film to scare the kids.
Bonus film:
6. “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (1974) 5 tweens on a road trip stop by Sally and Franklin’s grandfather’s grave since there have been several grave robbing incidents in that area. Seeing that the grave is undisturbed they head to granddads old house. They meet up with a family of goons who use tweens to make bar-b-que. It’s am absolutely classic film and very scary. 5 stars.
Great post about MOVIES for a change. Thanks OMH. Your lists and reviews have changed the way lists and reviews will be written in the future on EUM for eons.
Trash post TRASHHHHHHHHH!!! TRASH ASF
This is a wonderful post and fabulously written. I applaud you for you’re expertise in films. Your such an valuable asset two this web site.
Why did the triggered insecure jealous asshole disappear? Did it pussy out?
Meow is seething with jealousy. She’s been studying all my posts diligently for grammatical errors but she doesn’t realize that I put those errors in my posts on purpose to see if anyone reads them. Obviously Meow reads every nook and cranny of my posts because she is trying to get better at writing herself. Good detective work Charlie Brown.
This post is a proofreading disaster. “Rouge planet” instead of “rogue planet,” “who’s story” instead of “whose story,” “who’s looks” instead of “whose looks,” and “$100 dollars” because apparently one dollar reference wasn’t enough. “It’s am absolutely classic film” is a grammatical car crash, and “in to” should be “into” in the contexts used. The author calls the characters in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre “tweens,” despite them being young adults, then describes a murderous family of cannibals as “goons who use tweens to make bar-b-que.” That’s not a synopsis, it’s a plot summary assembled during a power cut. The Omega Man’s mutants aren’t supernatural ghouls, “super deep depression” sounds like a teenager’s book report, and “trophy wives” is lazy, dismissive writing. The Race with the Devil summary also misrepresents the RV purchase and oversimplifies the characters’ decisions. Then there’s “for a coon’s age,” an outdated expression best replaced with “for ages.” The post promises five movies but sneaks in a sixth, and calls Melancholia an end-of-the-world film “to scare the kids,” which is a spectacularly odd way to sell a psychological drama. Verdict: decent movie choices, sloppy writing, questionable accuracy, and enough typos to make the dictionary request witness protection.
What a bloody’ dumbass.
As usual, the retard got triggered. Too bad you cant make posts anymore, but I enjoy seeing the tantrums you throw in the comments. Keep them coming, little asshole.
This post is ass. It smells like unwashed booty cheeks and blue cheese.
Ha ha ha ha ha – Meow is clearly frothing at the mouth. Can we get the triggered sourpuss to have another meltdown?
As one of Meows friends I can say that is the shittiest post ever. Trust me, you don’t wanna mess with me, mate.
Hats off to OMH for this great list. Halloween rolls around and people start thinking to themselves “Gee, I’d like to see a good and scary movie for Halloween” and then BAM! OMH comes out with the list. Absolutely brilliant!
Once again another great list from OMH on a timely topic. Would anyone else be genius enough to make a movie list like this before Halloween? Apparently not. OMH sets the bar for excellence yet again. Great work OMH.
As a wise and intelligent person, I can say that this post is objectively bad and trash. 8 votes and 2 stars – where’s your VPN this time you little asshole? Ha – ha – ha.
No VPN for Mr. Fatass OMH. What’s wrong? Did your wife catch you using it to jerkoff to anime girls NTR?
I must’ve been high writing that comment. This post is fucking garbage. It smells of rotten eggs and farts.
Thanks for putting this list up OMH. I was looking to find some horror movies for Halloween. There are a few on here I haven’t seen. Thanks again. It’s great to have someone on EUM that talks about movies instead of stupid shit all the time.
