1. Type O Negative – My favourite of all time. I have listened to their entire discography multiple times and there’s not a single skip. I don’t think I’d say this about any other band but they have a fantastic sense of humour, it’s difficult to explain.
My favourite song by them is Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity from the album Slow, Deep and Hard, which was made after the lead singer/bassist Peter Steele went to prison for 30 days after breaking the jaw of the man his long-term girlfriend cheated on him with.

2. Plastic Tree – This is a band that’s very versatile. They’re Japanese but have a lot of western influence particularly from British bands as well as others like Nirvana. Most of the visual kei bands I listen to are metal or metal adjacent and whilst Plastic Tree does have some heavier songs like San Gatsu Itsu Ka, the songs I mainly listen to are quite soft. I’m fond of songs like Tefu Tefu, Azabana, Sonzai Riyuu and Yoiyami in particular.

3. The Cure – Absolute powerhouse of a band. There’s something for everyone with this band. I’ve been listening to them for so long, not so much their darker stuff but I had a few of their most popular songs downloaded on my MP4 player as a kid. I then rediscovered them when I was getting into post-punk/goth music when I was like 14. My favourite song by them is From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea.

4. Machine Girl – It was thanks to this band I discovered this website actually. They made an album called WLFGRL that has a lot of samples, particularly from the films Ginger Snaps, Ginger Snaps 2 and the bands namesake The Machine Girl. I wanted to watch Ginger Snaps because I looked up the film and it looked visually appealing to me and found the other two on here and thought might as well watch them too. My favourite album by them is MG Ultra but my favourite song by them is probably Scroll of Sorrow or Rabbit Season.

5. Madmans Esprit – This is probably the most obscure band on this list. My favourite song by them is probably idontknowwhoiambutthesexgoeson or Euimong but I can’t decide. The singer can speak Korean, English, Japanese and German which he involves in the music, I enjoy it. I discovered them 2 and a half years ago and it’s been nice watching them evolve. Their music videos in particular are quite evocative.
