“The House Was Not Hungry Then” (2025) is described as a “horror” movie. This one will really test your patience. It’s slow and I mean really fucking sloooowww. It makes “The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael” (2005) seem fast paced. It felt like an endurance test but strangely compelling in a way as well.
There are 6 stationary camera shots (2 more later which I will discuss when I get there):
Downstairs:
Living Room
Front Hallway
Rear Hallway
Bottom of the Stairs
Upstairs:
Master Bedroom (I assume)
Hallway
Child’s Room (later)
Doll House (later)
There are 3 main characters: The owner, the squatter and the house itself.
The owner brings potential buyers to the house to look around and they end up vanishing. Objects disappear and reappear from time to time. It’s a big house that needs a paint job but it is in pretty good shape. It’s a fixer-upper but it has nice walnut door and window trim, nice windows and hardwood floors.
The owner (and later the squatter) has conversations with the house which is in the form of an invisible ghost or something (to them). When the female squatter shows up, the house takes a shine to her and they chat quite a bit. The house occasionally gives the movie viewers written messages on the screen like “wake up” or “get out” or “he would speak words aloud to try them.” Later the house waxes poetic with philosophy and other “deeper meaning” gobbledegook. A guy I used to work with would always say when he saw a pretty girl with nice, big tits “I could do Shakespeare on that balcony.” He’s dead now. It means something, right? When the squatter enters the child’s room we see the angle from the 7th stationary camera and the 8th camera shows the viewpoint from the dollhouse, which is a stationary camera shot but the dollhouse is travelling at times. If it sounds like it’s important to the film that’s because it is. Whether the film itself is important is another question altogether.
Anywho, like I said, it’s slow as molasses. It’s got a minimal music soundtrack and a lot of times you can’t hear the dialog because people are in different rooms and this is done on purpose. During the first few minutes of the film I thought there was something wrong with my sound system because there is no sound in the film at the beginning at all. It’s an odd film. It’s very strange but I feel like I need to see it again for some reason. It gets horrible reviews. Don’t ask me why but I kinda liked it. 3 and a half stars.
