“Lovely Molly” (2011) We first meet former drug addict and ex-psychiatric patient Molly during her wedding to Tim and she seems to have fully recovered from her drug addiction and mental illness. Things go tits up when Molly and hubby Tim move in to Molly’s former childhood home. After a frightening episode with a possible intruder in their house, old demons start to emerge and before you know it Molly is back on the needle and losing her grip on reality. If you want the technical jargon I can reel off yards of it. Catatonia, dementia praecox, passive schizoid paranoia. It all boils down to the fact that she’s had an experience that she can’t face and she’s running away from it inside herself.
This is directed by one of the co-directors of “The Blair Witch Project” (1999) and some of that found footage style is intergraded within the film but oddly the non-found footage stuff is more frightening. Molly becomes quite violent and scary. The transformation is somewhat unnerving. When Tim finds Molly sitting alone in the guest bedroom her body seems contorted and odd and cute little Molly is suddenly frightening and strange. Although this is definitely a horror film, a lot of what happens does not seem like something that would not happen IRL. There are quite a few memorable moments and some real weird stuff too. Yeah – I liked it. 4 and a half stars.
