The Lodge (2019)

“The Lodge” (2019) is a dark psychological horror film that starts out promising. Grieving kids Mia and Aiden dislike their future stepmom before they even meet her and rightly so. Dad asks them (forces them) to go to a lodge at Christmas time so they can get better acquainted with Grace, their future stepmom and lone survivor of a weird cult. Of course dad has to leave them alone with Grace in the lodge for a while to tend to some business. Wouldn’t you know that there is a sudden blizzard and the power goes out. All of a sudden all this weird shit starts to happen.

“The Lodge” is directed by the same folks who are responsible for “Goodnight Mommy” (2014), which is available to watch right here on EUM. “The Lodge” contains some startling scenes that will keep your interest for a while but, for me, the story disappeared up it’s own ass by trying to be too clever as the movie went on. Riley Keough gives an outstanding performance as Grace and Alicia Silverstone, while only briefly in the film, leaves a lasting impression. The story became too disjointed, convoluted and unrealistic for me, which is a shame because all the elements seemed to be there to make this film a gem. A major issue I had is the whispering dialog that was barely audible followed by super loud gun shots, banging, loud music or screaming. 3 stars.
